$5 on the door

In June, Open Studio hosted Shae Bird’s EP launch with talented supports Julz Evans and Marcus Matthews. The whole lineup of enchanting songwriters is returning in the spring, with new colours.

Shae Bird and collaborates have been brewing up a band. Both the drummer Derwent and Shae are Perth migrants- Shae used to play violin in Moana (mythic rock) and Acushla (instrumental- their mum’s band) before leaving. Panfred Reed plays accordion in moonspice and piano in improvised musicals with Impro Melbourne. Pan and Derwent keenly dissect and build on Shae’s intuitive song-writing. The result is a dynamic sound drawing on folk, pop and even dubstep. This will be their debut full band gig.

Julz Evans (trio)
Julz Evans plays an honest, emotionally confronting dispense of folk-rock-pop-roots-indie indulgence. They have been gigging locally this year with band The Bad Moods, and recording a shiny new EP at Love Shack Studios. They’ll be featuring Ellen Duhig the amazing cellist. Julz also plays bass for the alternative/grunge/punk band Erin Will Be Mad and country/folk/pop prodigy Eaglemont.
Marcus Matthews (solo)
Marcus Matthews is a Melbourne based artist whose most recent musical project was a folk band called ‘The Ugly Mugs’. Marcus has been writing songs since the age of 14, and will be playing the mandolin and the guitar as well as singing a collection of original songs.
